Getting started in the world of blogging
Ok, great start… you have opened up this blog post ready to start your very first blog, but where do you start? Fear not, I am here to help you create your first blog…Yay!
When I first started blogging I started using Blogger. I had previously used it to complete all of my A level Media Studies coursework so I knew how to navigate around the platform. It is really useful and is super simple to set up. All you need is a Google account and you are good to go. I was really impatient and raring to go on my first blog post when I started blogging. So Blogger was the perfect option for me.
WordPress is another great blogging platform to use which I have now switched across to. I would only advise moving to WordPress if you are good with working on the more technical side of blogging, or if you have had some experience using blogging platforms or CMS (Content Management Systems) and want to start looking at more advanced components on your blog, such as installing plugins to build on your SEO. Of course if you are a beginner, you can by all means use it but it just might take you a little longer. In the long run I would definitely recommend WordPress. I will be writing another post about how to convert your Blogger site into WordPress also in another post. Make sure you are following me on Twitter to see that post go live on my blog.
If you’re a beginner, I would suggest using blogger to start you off. It’s a great platform to get you into blogging.
You can create a blog with Blogger by following this link. You will be asked to create a Google account if you do not already have one. You will then follow basic instructions on creating a blog name and setting a theme that fits with your style.
If you have any questions about setting up a Blogger site, please drop a note in the comments or contact me. The best part is that Blogger is FREE!
Please note: WordPress.org and WordPress.com are very different
Apologies that I had to start off with that note but I have made the mistake myself by downloading a WordPress theme and because I had a WordPress.com site I was unable to install a custom theme.
WordPress is a great platform and it is what I use for my blog. It is a CMS (Content Management System) which is where a developer will create the theme for you and you will edit all of your content and install plugins to optimise your blog. It has a lot more variety of options than Blogger has, however it can be more difficult to set up.
If you are just starting up your blog I would recommend using WordPress.com. It will allow you to create a blog from scratch, set up a domain name (i.e yasminstageman.co.uk) and they will host it online for your (meaning you will not have to pay for a web hosting provider). They have a basic package which is free but they also provide a range of plans depending on which options you want with your package.
To get started on creating a WordPress.com website (the one with webhosting and domain name include) you can click here.
Check out WordPress.org (where you have more advanced settings and custom themes. You will need web hosting and a domain name) you can click here.
As always, it’s been a pleasure and I hope that this post has been useful. Please share your blog links below in the comments! 🙂
